Presentation SMD
The Surveys and Mapping Department (SMD) is a Government of Uganda Agency established under the Survey Act responsible for carrying out activities of Surveying and Cartographic Mapping in Uganda since 1902.
Therefore, SMD’s role is to provide leadership through coordination, support and cooperation in surveying, mapping and charting by:
- Addressing surveying, mapping and charting issues.
- Supporting the development and implementation of national standards, guidelines and instructions for surveying, mapping and charting.
- Providing a national forum for identifying and developing surveying, mapping and charting policy, innovation and technology issues, and for the exchange/sharing of information on surveying, mapping and charting.
- Supporting the re-affirmation/establishment/demarcation of Uganda’s National and International Boundary.
- Encouraging and formulating research and innovation into surveying, mapping and charting.
SMD’s core function is to coordinate and promote the development and maintenance of key national spatial data including geodetic, topographic, cadastral, street addressing, photogrammetry, photography, remote sensing, tides & water levels, litho-printing, and geographical names. SMD carries out its role by meeting its objectives in the areas of:
- Geodesy
- Topographic Mapping
- Thematic Mapping
- Large Scale Mapping (Towns, Municipalities and Cities)
- Hydrographic Surveying and Charting
- Cadastral data maintenance in the National Land Information System
- Photogrammetry and Satellite Imagery
- Remote Sensing
- Updating the National Geographical Names and Boundaries
- Establishing cadastre linkage for the Archived and Native Land Titles
- Surveying and archival of all Government and Institutional Land
- Re-affirmation/establishment or demarcation of Uganda’s National and International Boundary
- Trans-Institutional Cooperation
- Research and Innovation in the Surveys and Mapping World
- International links and liaison
